SL/R231: Is Part Of The SL's Pricing Due To Prestige?

Is Part Of The SL's Pricing Due To Prestige?
Looking at the other models on Mercedes sites I see that most options found in the SL line can be found in other MB models that cost less yet the R231 is in the higher price range. Besides "design" and the retractable hard top what makes the R231 more expensive than other MB autos?

Historically, the SL sits price wise above the S-Class (same engine). Same as the S-Class coupe and the CL before.
Current line up: Cab > Coupe > SL > Sedan
Besides the positioning of the car, production volume plays a key role in pricing.
R&D & tooling, etc. must be re-couped somehow.
