Noise and Vibration

I have a 2014 SL 550 and a day ago the car has developed and annoying noise and vibration. The noise sounds like a low growl, like bearing going bad. The noise cycles on and off...you hear it for 20 seconds or so every few minutes. Can also feel transference of vibration in the steering wheel. Not an AC problem because it occurs when AC is off. Could it be a pump, servo, transmission or ???

Does your SL550 have the ABC suspension system? If so go to the R230 section of this forum and ask there.

I take it you think the issue might be with the ABC suspension?

Just a guess with little information. A pulsation dampner going bad can cause what you describe.
Also the motor and transmission mounts can eventually get brittle, crack and leak out the internal fluid and the vibrations from the engine and transmission can be accentuated.

I would imagine that, that is highly unlikely on a 3-4 year old high end MB?

This car only has 18k miles on it. I purchased it CPO in Nov of last year. I’m surprised that any component is already going bad. Based on other things I’ve read in the forum, sounds like most likely culprit is the ABC suspension. Growling seems worse in corners and when braking and slowing down. No noise when car is sitting still. I’m taking the car in to the dealership on Tuesday and I’ll let you know what I find. I’m under warranty, thank goodness.

Just trying to give the OP suggestions to ask about at the dealership. Some back on the R230 forum broke motor mounts just hitting one deep road pot hole so anything is possible. They are a rubber like sphere filled with fluid. Hopefully it is something minor and I will be curious as to what he finds out.

Update: the problem was indeed with the ABC system...two pressure accumulators (aka dampers). One was the pulsation damper on the front valve unit in the left front fender. This one was making the cycling noise as the system adjusted pressure. The second damper was on the front of the engine, on the pump, I believe. This one had really started to make a racket in a really short period of time. All covered under CPO warranty.

Again the car was manufactured in 09/13, 2014 MY, with only 19k miles. I’m surprised that the dampers failed after only 4 years and 19k miles. Has anyone else seen the dampers (accumulators) fail so early?
