Electric air control valve in engine bay
There is an electric control valve on ht e drivers side by the strut tower than makes a clicking sound when the engine is running. My r129 does not make is quiet. What is the valve and what does it do? I believe it needs to be replaced due to the noise it makes.

I was able to determain that the valve is fuel purge valve. I ordered a replacement, I do not know if the valve is suppose to make a constant clicking sound. At times it does stop clicking. Most of the time when the engine is running it constantly clicks on and off. It is noisy.

I don't know how far away your next nearest dealership is but I would at least give them a call and see what they have to say about it.

The OP mentioned that he had a R129 SL. That would be a 1989-2002 SL. Different car.
That said, The ticking sound for a purge valve is normal behavior. Remember that from our older MB's. They tick for a little while and then stop...

I own a R230 and a R129. I replaced the purge valve, the new one is not noisy like the old one. The old one you could hear from outside the car with the hood down.
