I remember these. There weren't very many. Knew a guy who owned one years later. Kept his fingers crossed every time he opened or closed the top.

As a young man in the late '50's, a good friend of mine's mom had one of these. We were so fascinated that it really worked! What a novel idea we thought. Mrs. Mayfield's was black and gold, and had a ton of room in the front and back seat. Also had a little 'storage' pod in the trunk so that you could still have your stuff protected when the top was lowered. Classic car; saw one at Cars and Coffee not too long ago and they had the continental kit on the back for the spare!. Fun times, but not quite as fast as the SL! Thanks for posting!

Just to be clear, Edsel also made these hardtop convertibles. A good friend's parents had one, triple black, which they waxed every single weekend. I don't know whatever happened to the car, but if they sold it, someone got a great deal.

I understand that the Peugeot Eclipse (France) was the 1st ever car with this trick, in 1934. I saw a bare metal restoration, probably the Peugeot, equipped with..... a manual mechanism. You’d have to stick a cranck somewhere in the rear fender and apply elbow grease. Not much wrong with that, right? Mind you, this car was HUGE. And the inventor was a dentist, clever blokes, dentists.
