Well, after purchasing my cabin filter last October, I'm finally trying to get it installed. pi_4X4 link to the YouTube video was fine IF you have a 2003 SLK 230, but it's not even close for an R231 SL550.
My question to you is this. There is a 12v outlet that is to the left of the panel (See photos). It looks to me like this has to come off to drop the whole panel and get to the cabin filter. Do you remember what you did to get this out so you could drop the entire panel? I can actually see the cabin filter, but without dropping the entire panel, I can't get to it.
Any help would be appreciated.

I have changed the cabin filter several times. First put the passenger seat all the way back. Second, remove the black flat cover panel under the glove box door, ( 3 or 4 screws) on the bottom of the dash where the courtesy lamp is. You have to twist it a little to get it to clear everything. Do not remove the kick panel with the 12v adapter. Once you get that panel out of the way (unplug the electrical connector for the courtesy light or unplug the light from the panel) fold back the carpet back pull it from the fire wall and fold it toward the passenger seat. Now you have to lay down face up on the passenger floor and look up you’ll see a black plastic plate. There are two sliding plastic rails that you have to slide to get the plate off. Once that is off you’ll see the bottom of the filter. Make note of the direction of the filter, it goes back only one direction. Just pull the old filter out and put the new one back. Hold up the plate and slide the little plastic rails back to hold it in place, flip the carpet back in place and replace the bottom cover. Sounds much worse than it is...takes about 20 minutes the first time and about 10 minutes next time. I put a moving blanket on the threshold sill so I could lay down without breaking a rib or two. It’s really very easy. It’s really a pain in the butt! 😀😀😀😀 It’s fun and rewarding to work on these cars. Atlas Miami

Thanks so much for your input!
greetings from Germany. I found your post as I am trying to replace my cabin filter.
I am stuck at the point when trying to remove the panel. No idea on how to get it out on the left side. See the photos.
Any suggestions.
Thx Step

I also found the mounting instructions from one of the OEMs. Very useful and available for almost any car:
