Tuning with OBD Module?

Has anyone used an OBD module to tune their car? eBay has several with lots of positive reviews. Tune is reversible back to stock and module does not stay in place. Concerned about warranty implications. Is the TT V6 stout enough to handle 400 HP? That is what is being claimed with the tune.

Throw a link up and I could tell ya if it’s legit

we have handheld obd tuners as well and they work great. It allows you to flash from home as well as reflash stock when wanted.

Don't do it. Put it on a dyno, with a dyno tech that really know what he/she is doing.

I have the Vivid Racing VRTune that I loaded with an OBD device and have had no problem. It may not be an optimal tune, but it's pretty darn good for off-the-shelf. Now, if I was adding significant bolt-ons, that may be a different story. But with everything else stock, I see no problem with off-the-shelf from a reputable tuner.

Maybe. But I have a background in tuning bikes - and while they may typically have more bolt ons - I have always found that a proper dyno tune yields the best results. It might not be massively better, but it is almost always better in some way. Whether that is smoother TQ delivery, more HP, better and more consistent fueling or whatever. With a canned map, I have always found there is something left on the table that could have been had.

But I get it. A canned map from a tuning box is easier to source, doesn't require a trip to somebody who knows that specific engine, the relevant tuning software and has the correct type of dyno (which is a big investment). There just aren't that many capable, competent and properly equipped tuners around. And doing it on the dyno may also be more expensive.

But for my money, if those conditions are met, you will always get a better result.

I don't disagree. But missing those other things, off-the-shelf may be the only option.

I will say that I got the Stage 2 tune from Vivid Racing and didn't really like it. I had purchased Stage 1 originally and upgraded to Stage 2. So, I had Stock, Stage 1, and Stage 2 loaded in the OBD tool. After about a year, I wrote the company, describing the symptoms I had with Stage 2 (strange bogging feeling and delayed shifting), and they wrote a new file that fixed all the drivability issues and gave better performance than the Stage 1 file. I will say that customer service was excellent.

Thanks for the continued support @JettaRed !

Our VR Tunes are a great option for those vehicles with no mods, or a handful of bolt on mods, to maximize the performance of your motor! Our tunes copy the stock file (just in case of an emergency) and adjust the stock files to focus less on fuel efficiency, and more on HP gains. We offer both flash tunes and tuner boxes!

Here's what we have!

Tuning Box
