2013 SL 550 (Previously 2012 Porsche Panamera Turbo-S, 2015 Tesla P85D, 2007 S600, 2005 E55 AMG)
New 2013 Sl 550 just joined the club. (Self insure?)

I just purchased a 2013 SL 550 Black on Black from an MB dealer with only 11,000 miles on the clock. The condition of this car looks and feels new with only one previous owner and was garaged only a few miles away from me in the San Francisco East Bay so it seemed a great buy. I have never owned a convertible before but driving up Napa Valley with the top down on a warm day yesterday was heavenly! Also very impressed that even at freeway speeds how little wind buffeting there is in the car. With the top up it is like 2-cars in one. Nothing none of you here don't already appreciate of course, but I have been reading many threads in this forum and pleased with my purchase.

This SL 550 is fully specified except for ABC which I am familiar with from my old S600 sold in 2014. As my last car was a Porsche Panamera Turbo I am used to a firmer ride which seems more in character with the SL anyway. I may though swap the run-flats to standard tires when their time is up.

I have not purchased an extended warranty yet. They tend to be expensive and have never had any major problems (I have had to pay for) with my previous five MB's. The lack of ABC is is one less expensive thing to go wrong. Given the very low mileage and general reliability of this generation SL I am reading about, I may just bank the money and self insure. Interested in what others are doing with cars of this age and low mileage.

SL550
If you do want to swap the tires, definitely go for the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S. the rear tires will have to be upsized to 295s, but it makes the SL look much better! The AS/3 is a good choice too, and I'm sure members of the forum will try to challenge my opinion that the PS4S is better than the AS/3. However, if you've come from a Panemera Turbo, you'll appreciate the performance and looks of that tire. And if you do find yourself wanting more performance, a Renntech tune wouldn't hurt!

But anyways, welcome to the club!

2013 SL550 Edition 1 and 2017 GLS 550
Beautiful car. I also have a 2013 MB SL550 Edition1 with 16k, purchased in December, 2017. I live in Overland Park, KS (suburb of Kansas City), so I’m finished with my second convertible season. I purchased it with 11k, so am putting about 2,500 miles on it a year. Strictly a weekend driver to and from the country club.

I also decided to self-insure. I also own a 2015 GL550 CPO car and did purchase a 2 year extended warranty on it at $3,750! But, it is my daily driver and at present, has 63k on it. I’ve had literally no problems and my CPO ends on 11/24/19, so I’m contemplating cancelling the extended warranty, putting the $3,750, which is 100% refundable if I do it before it starts, and taking my chances.

But, for our SL’s, with as few miles as they have, I’ll pay for the little things that go wrong and hope I don’t have to shell out big bucks at some point down the line. Congratulations on your purchase. I wish we had a better convertible season here in the Midwest!!
