2014 SL 550 Sport Package
I just used an oil extractor on my recently acquired SL550 and was presently surprised how much oil I was able to extract. AtlasMiami’s statement that it is specifically designed to be optimally drained using an extraction tube makes sense. I used the same method on my old R230 that he the same total oil capacity and I was able to extract a liter more from the R231 than I was ever able to extract from the R230.

I do it the old fashioned way. Drain from the bottom of the engine. Fortunately I have access to a nice lift at a friend's garage.

Having removed the lower oil pan, The extraction method is just as effective, if not more, removing the oil. The car has to be perfectly level if you are going to drain from the drain plug hole. So, it's not a critical if you have a lift. But ramps would allow some oil to pool away from the hole. Not much, just a little.

My only recommendation is to insert the plastic tubing into the dipstick tube and mark the length to the bottom of the oil pan while everything is cold. Though the tubing is relatively stiff when cold it gets a bit flaccid in a hot engine/oil and I can see where you could possibly insert it too far and it could curve in any direction and not sit in the bottom of the pan....
Excellent idea. I will try that next time. I usually fiddle with the suction tube a little as it starts to suck air and can get more oil out. I consistently evacuate 6.5 liters when adding (estimating) what the filter holds.

Exactly. Using a lift also allows me to conduct a thorough inspection of the undercarriage. Brake lines, rear diff, shocks, etc. I like getting under the car evey 12 months as I change the oil and filter every 12 months irregardless of the miles driven which are about 3000 per year. I know the oil companies say full synthetic is good for up to 20,000 miles but no way I'm waiting 6 years to change the oil in my cars. Same thing for my wife's Lexus. I change it every year using the same lift.

My BMW goes to the dealer as I bought a 3 year oil change deal for $225. This is about what the oil and filters would cost so it's a good deal. Of course, they always tell me there are other things that need attention, like cabin filters engine air filters, brake fluid flush, etc. but I do all these myself using my friend's garage.

Happy Belated New Year to all. I hope 2025 is better than 2024 for a lot of reasons.
