I was able to activate that feature, as well as most other ROW features, on my VW with free VCDS VW/Audi-specific software that I downloaded. I wish we had something like that for the SL...without purchasing expensive aftermarket modules, etc.

Wow, good post and reviews. I am worn out and need to take a nap now. I agree with most everything you all have said so will not add my two cents, except I love the seats. But then again, I am a little guy almost the exact same size as cjf maraga!

Essentially there is a fader option buried in the engineering menu that you can turn on. Its a COMMAND system option intended for 4-seater cars but can be activated in the SL. Makes a massive difference. Turn the Bass and Treble to maximum and push the Fader back by about 5 or 6 and the sound moves notably towards you and is much more resonant with the rear speakers actually audible. I am reasonably happy with the sound now. All it seems because of a stupid decision to make the full surround capabilities of the audio obsolete DVD Audio only, but the Fader option is in there!

Finally got around to doing this today and the results were very strong. Much better and “fuller” sound!

This fix not allowed in 2017 and later models.

Believe me I tried...even the Ch Mech @ my dealer tried.

If it worked (depending on improvement) I might not have needed to install the amp ect.

I haven’t been driving the SL much since I made this “tweak”. That is until this weekend.
I can’t believe what a difference this makes in my car’s sound system, especially with the top up!
Many thanks to this forum for the useful information shared here.

On rare occasions I have noticed that the fader slider which is normally set at 5 positions backwards has flipped back to the default "center" position. I could swear I did not reset it. I am wondering though that it may be because I have a 2013 and that the battery is getting on a bit.

But such is the difference I notice almost immediately!

2009 SL550
Just stumbled across this post. Still have this blue SL550? If so, ready to sell it?
I'm currently looking for one in this blue color scheme. Rare color and interior combo.
Thanks,
Reid C

Great reading on this thread. Quick question: Where is a link to access the “engineering menu” and the steps to activate the rear speakers. I have the 2015 SL 400.

thank you

Joe

personally I'm fine with the rear speakers as-is; music should come from in front of me.
