SL Transmission?
OK, I understand the newer models have a 9 speed vs a 7 speed in the older models. Are they both a traditional automatics with a torque converter? I have seen the term MCT used vs a DCT but not sure if either apply to the R231 tranny. Can someone educate me?

2020 SL550
The 9 speed is a standard automatic transmission with a torque converter. It is not a dual clutch, unless you get the SL63/65, which has the 7 speed MCT (Multi-clutch). My experience with my last 2018 SL550, the 9 speed is very smooth with quick responses. Before the SL, I had a BMW 650 and the Mercedes transmission is nicer. I drove the 650 with the paddle shifters a lot, but with the Mercedes I found that I rarely use the paddles as the transmission does such a great job with up and down shifts when needed.

2020 SL550
From a quick search, it looks like the 7 speed in the SL400 and 550 were also normal automatic transmissions, not MCT or DCT.

2013 650i Coupe, 2010 IS250 AWD, 1999 S500
All transmissions in the NON-AMG SL models are either 7 or 9 speed traditional automatics. The AMG models have the MCT style transmission.

True on the SL63. The SL65 always had an old school slushbox

I have a sl63 and love the smooth shifting when driving casually or very spirited driving, this thing pulls like a freight train !!!

I understand that MCT does not like stop/start traffic. Excessive wear with clutches continually slipping in the traffic.
