SL/R231: Keeping roof half open (service position)
#26
The official part number would be A0009893660, but may be dearer depending on your location. Discussion of using it on rubber seals and/or pivot points can be found via googling “mercedes krytox” or places like this.
As personal opinion, I do not think it is strictly necessary outside 2 scenarios: Either the roof/window seals have issues, or you are planning to keep the car for a very long time and it is simply preventative maintenance.
Edit: One warning note. I actually have one of the M-B bottles myself, and it comes with a rather thick multi-language warning label with bold red lettering explaining that it can NOT be cleaned off completely. It warns you to be careful when applying it as it may affect the reliability of future painting or bonding work, and any tools including cloths used with it are "contaminated" and are to be disposed of instead of washed.

Regarding the roof mechanism being held open, could you not open the roof to the required position then turn off the battery isolator in the engine compartment. And would silicone spray or grease work on the seals etc.

I didn't know there was a battery isolator but it would make no difference. I understand the system is hydraulic....

Rory is correct. I know from personal experience on an SLK 172 that the roof depressurises without warning and folds down. You don't want fingers to be anywhere near the mechanism if that happens!
I'm guessing its much the same for a 231 SL.

The small battery located under the front hood is the start only battery. You'll see how small it is.
The rear battery located under the trunk lining is, as stated, for all the auxiliary components.
I an not sure if the MB has this option, however, on my Bentley, if the start battery dies, you can use the auxiliary battery to start the vehicle by holding the key in the ignition to the left, holding it, then start the vehicle as you normally would.

Not sure which model you have but I believe that the auxiliary battery is behind the right seat in all R231s

Going back a few post's I can understand the logic of leaving the engine running whilst having the roof open halfway, which keeps the hydraulic pressure constant. As I said in one of my post's I thought the mechanism was purely electrical. We live and learn.

Out of curiosity I opened my roof half way and left the engine running whilst I cleaned the seals. I watched a video the other day and the guy said to be careful because the roof will start to close after seven minutes even with the engine running. However whilst doing the seals I heard a bleep/bleeps and a message saying that the roof will start to close, but it didn't it stayed put the whole time till I closed it. So there is some conflicting information out there.
