Retractable Hardtop?

I could have added this to the "SL Spy Picture" thread, but I came across this on the AutoWeek site about the new Porsche 911 Targa. It states that "the roof is electric, opening and closing with a push of a button in 19 seconds." How does that work? Where does that roof go .. on top the engine in the rear compartment? Here a link to the article:

Wow! Who Knew? Thanks. I was not aware. Maybe some of the SL crowd who want a new vehicle with a retractable hardtop will consider this option if the new SL is a soft top.

Only MBs - the best or nothing
Targa's top is canvas, it is not hard top. What a waste of otherwise clever engineering. Once up, IMHO it is ugly. Never liked 911 targas - 911 cabs or coupes only.

How would it go over the engine compartment? The engine is BEHIND the rear axle. It simply goes where the parcel shelf is on the coupe 911 models.

The tech is cool but very similar to mid-engine hardtop mechanisms. They carry very little weight and as they literally only take off the cover. The structural components are fixed (B-Pillar on Targa, C-Pillar on mid-engined cars).
Love the way the Targa was redesigned like this 6 years ago or so from the days of old but a Targa is not a great car to drive IMO. A lot of wind noise/movement...

I see the wrinkle in the canvas during operation. Why wouldn't Porsche tweak the geometry slightly to allow a hard top? I agree -- what a waste.

Having owned numerous Porsche 911 Targa models in the 1970’s and 1980’s, I was convinced that I wanted a 2019. So, I test drove one and was SO disappointed with the air turbulence inside the cabin, with the top down and the windows lowered. Not at all like the old Targas. AND, equipped the way I wanted, it would have been around $180K! For top down 911 driving, I’d go with their cabriolet. All that said, I’m so happy where I ended up, with my SL.

Jeez...I thought the 992 Targa's folding/stowing top portion was, in fact, cloth-covered magnesium...which would make it a hard top after all. Am I wrong about this?
