phone holder falls off...

I have this phone holder/charger that attaches via a sticky suction cup that regularly falls off. I'd really rather not make holes in the console, so I'm hoping to find some kind of clip that would hold it tightly in place. Any ideas?

I've been pleased with a magnetic mount from FITFORT as seen here:

https://www.amazon.com/Magnetic-Phone-Holder-Mount-Car/dp/B07G73GZ93/ref=sr_1_3?crid=2R9HOLSWZAAB9&dchild=1&keywords=fi tfort+magnetic+car+mount&qid=1591315327&sprefix=fi t+fort%2Caps%2C201&sr=8-3

I actually have one of these in two cars. You can see from the photos where I chose to mount this in my SL but you could easily chose to put is on the wood trim on the right side of the key pad.You have to stick a thin steel pad on the back of your phone. I doubt if the strong magnet would interfere with your charger (you might check with James Clerk Maxwell on this.)

I've also tried several CD slot phone mounts (Google this) but have found them more intrusive when not holding a device.

thanks, but I'm not looking for a new mount, just ideas to keep the mount I have secured. mine has Qi charging and sensor that triggers motorized open/close function.

You'll have to find an existing smooth surface for the suction cup. I've tried and given up on several suction cup mounts. I highly recommend the magnetic mount that I've suggested in my previous post.

The windshield is probably the best smooth surface available. Could you mount your current holder there? Perhaps you could create a new smooth surface by adding a trim piece held in place with a 3M double sided adhesive pad. Will the suction cup hold on the wood surface just to the right of the numerical key pad? It is curved but the cup might hold.

Your mount is just a mount; mine's a rapid charger plugged into the 12v outlet in the passenger footwell. How do you charge your phone? Remove it from the mount and put it in the console, or leave it in the mount and run wires? Your chosen mount location blocks too many controls, in my opinion.

I'd never mount anything on the windshield; it's only flat in the most important areas for field of vision.

Have you ever removed that 3M double-sided tape successfully? I wouldn't want to stick it the wood any more than I would the face of the COMAND.

I'm hoping to find either a clip that would hold the suction cup tight to console or a flat metal or plastic clip that I can stick the suction cup to.

OK. Each to his own. I hope you find a suitable solution.

I think your problem is that pebble grain texture that you’re trying to stick the cup on. That grain will not allow good suction, as you’ve found out. They make a thin film the same diameter as the suction cup with an adhesive on one side. The idea is that the thin film provides the solid surface necessary for suction adhesion. I don’t know if that would work in your application or not, but it might be worth a try if you can find that film someplace. The few times I’ve seen this film have always been when supplied with a mount.

I agree. I have a metal disk with permanent adhesive that would function like the film you cite but I don't want to use it, as I fear it will not be able to be removed. Back in the 90's I had 3 watt booster hands-free kits installed in several cars and the holes they left behind were always an issue at trade-in time. I acknowledge I'm looking for a unicorn, but I keep hoping someone will recommend some relatively everyday item for my "off-label" use. The suction cup is approx. 2" in diameter; if I could find a binder clip, or a money clip that's 2" x 2" I could slip that onto the console and affix the suction cup to it. Or, if I could find a clip of some kind - like a large, squat version of a paper clip - that's 1-1/2 to 1-3/4" wide I could clip it over the suction cup to support it.

The charger came with an alternate vent mount, BTW, which also doesn't work well with the R231's vent design. I have an old Lexus RX330 that I use as a beach car/winter car, and both mounts work great in it. Ironic, as I wouldn't give a second thought to drilling holes in that car's dashboard!

My first CLK didn't have navigation and the little Garmin units were everywhere so I put a universal ball mount on one of the dummy switches in the console, described in THIS 2011 THREAD (apologies for the Photobucket watermarks). I was handier then, and much more willing to modify
