Buzzing sound coming from front interior at higher speeds?

I have a 2015 SL550 and just recently when going about 50 mph and higher, there is a buzzing sound (sounds like a bee is trapped) coming from the interior drivers side front of the vehicle- by the windshied /defrost area. I have about 40K miles. Happens when the A/C is on or off. Anyone have this issue before? Any ideas?

Strange but I had exactly the same issue last night. Wife was driving us home from a meal out, lovely evening with the top down. She said, “there is something rattling” upon closer examination she said, “it sounds like a fly or something trapped here,”’pointing at the very top of the drivers side A pillar (UK right hand drive).
I leant across and it was a very audible sound like something trapped at the top inside the A pillar.
Any ideas ?

So from talking to a couple others, they're saying it's possibly the exterior windshield pillar. The black strip attached that lays on the windshield. It's not secured properly and flaps at higher causing a buzzing sound in the interior. See pic attached. I'm going to put some blue painters tape around that lower area (towards the base of the windshield) and see if that fixes the issue. Let me know if you find out anything further. In reading further about some similar noises, I noticed some other posts saying.... Mercedes air temperature sensor OR Cabin Air Aspirator A/C Temperature Sensor which sound much more involved and pricey. Hope that's not the case here.

I just had my windshield replaced and I'm getting this buzzing noise too at speeds over 70MPH. I'm bringing the car back to Safelite and they are going to pull the windshield and re-install it or replace it if they break it taking it out. I didn't have this issue before the windshield was replaced. It does sound like a bee is stuck on top of the dashboard

Did you try taping it? Did it resolve the issue? Just curious before I have my windshield removed and replaced for no other reason....

That seal on the A-frame is not part of the windshield. It's attached to the A-frame cover (which is just painted plastic) which can be removed and re-attached in minutes. In most instances the seal is bent somewhat due to improper re-install of the cover. Had the same noise issue which was resolved with a quick re-install (if memory serves).
Worst case scenario is to replace that seal for a few bucks...

Wolfman,
You had the buzzing noise that you clearly heard in the cabin which was quite loud and increased at speeds and it was this trim piece? I'm going to check that out before I have my windshield replaced again. Thanks...

This was on the passenger side for me after some idiot tech at the dealership broke the windshield of our new SL... I couldn't identify the location of the sound while driving but noticed that the seal wasn't 100% flush. It may not be the cause in your case but that's easy to check with masking tape. Simply tape over the the rubber trim and over the windshield (2" wide tape for so) all the way down into the wiper/drain well.
Make sure it's well taped and go for a ride. If the noise is gone, you found the culprit, if not, schedule a dealer visit and have them do the work for you...

I will try this and if the noise goes away, I'm bringing the car back to Safelite Glass and have them fix their mistake. Thanks for the info...

Just to give an update on another alternative to buying a new A pillar.... Because mine was still in good condition (no cracks or anything), I decided to use silicone adhesive to stop that rattling. Just applied it underneath the weatherstripping (using a plastic putty tool) and secured to the windshield. So far it's been a couple days and no issues at all. Been on the highway multiple times. Hopefully it holds up!

I'd have gone with a proper re-installation on a car like this, rather than silicone-ing/gluing the loose piece, but I'm not much of a spit-and-bandaid kind of guy anyway. YMMV...

I had the windshield replaced on my 2020 SL550 at a Mercedes dealer. After the new windshield install, there was a buzzing from the right side at 60+ that was really loud. Took it back and they fixed it. Took them about 3 hrs with the Service Manager driving the car before and after they fixed it to verify that it was fixed.

Spoken like someone still covered under their factory warranty I see where you're coming from though... but my bandaid would be more of a permanent fix, as my A pillar and molding are in solid shape. Might as well try a $4.25 fix and 10 mins of my time rather throwing $350 at it for a brand new one. No damage to the windshield either. I'll put this one in the win column.

I went back to Safelite and I discussed this issue with one of the head technicians. They are ordering 2 new A pillars and will install them when they come in. This was after I printed and showed him this thread. I also took an audio file and played the buzzing noise to him and he stated that it's not a windshield leak so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.... Thanks for all the help.

Update: I took the car back to Safelite this morning and they replaced both A-Pillars and the problem was solved.... Buzzing noise gone. The technician told me that when they buttoned up the car after replacing the windshield, one of the techs missed the bottom clip on the driver's side but being that they ordered the pillars, they replaced them anyway.... Next up, going to Audiologic, a local high end stereo dealer and installer to figure out something to do with the stereo problem. I also have a RaceChip on order and that will be installed next week.... Then i'm done, at least for the time being. Thanks MBWorld forum for providing the insight and answers to make my driving experience better......

Hey! Not sure what you plan to do with the audio in general, but let me know if you find a good guy or team at Audio Logic. I live in Orlando so definitely worth a trip down if things work out.

I've used them in the past and I have the utmost confidence in their ability but I will keep you posted as to what they advise and as to how much I'm willing to spend...
