I'm not sure why this hadn't registered on my radar before. Anyway, after driving Porsche Macans, Porsche 911s etc I spotted one of these at my local Mercedes dealer in Belfast. It was poorly specified and a bit tired looking so I started looking for a young ex-demo.
Two weeks ago there were 11 of these cars available. I missed out on two of them, started negotiation and the car was sold before I could pay a deposit.
Anyway, I finally managed to get a deposit down on a six month old Sept 2020 registered car with 2000 miles. Grand Edition Premium with a night pack. Only things missing are ABC, Magic Sky and Driver Assistance. Not the colour combination I would have chosen, but there weren't any cars available.
Pick it up on Friday. Never driven an R231 SL so a little nervous. Have owned an R107 and an R129 in the past, along with a 2004 SLK first generation, which is still in my garage! I can't wait...
Glad I pulled the trigger, I think, as now there is only one car of the original eleven still remaining for sale.
£85000 list down to £50000 with 2000 miles. I almost managed to buy a Selenite car with delivery mileage for the same money. Was gutted at the time, but I think the Black on Black will look more classy when propertly detailed. I am sure it will require at least a machine polish when I bring it home.
I am also not a fan of the AMG multispoke wheels. I would much prefer the US five spokes, which weren't available here. They can be purchased though. So I might do that. I will see what the car looks like on Eibach 20mm spacers all around which are en route!
Congrats on a beautiful car — you will love it! I have the same wheels, and while I was not a huge fan at first, they have grown on me over time (although still no fun to clean).
Yeah. I would prefer these... I will see what the multispokes look like in real life... The five spokes aren't that expensive. And it would be almost one of a kind in Europe where the five spokes weren't offered. Much easier to clean too!

I think your car looks great in black with those wheels. Sounds like you got a great deal on it as well.

I believe the R231 SL’s look sensational in black, but when you are a “half glass empty” type as I am—who sees every spec of dust on a black surface—the color is out of the question. Funny too about the OP’s wheel preference for the base 5-spoke wheels. I ordered them on my car, only because they were the “no cost” option and I knew I would be replacing them shortly after taking delivery, which I did. Here are before and after photos:
I think if I had ordered one, I would have ordered white with Bengal Nappa. I actually prefer your car with the five spoke wheels! Something about the way the spokes curve, match the swoopy body of the car. Anyway it was your views on the 450SL along with the Zack Spencer motormouth review that persuaded me the 450 was the one to get!

I had a black SL for a short time. It was stunning and I really came to love the multispoke wheels once I added spacers and lowered the car. My advice with any new (to you) car is to live with it for 30-60 days as is and let your mind settle on what you really want to change. Then jump in with both feet. Many of the changes I wanted to do to past cars morphed after owning the car a bit, and waiting kept me from making two changes!!

Am always envious of the low SL prices in the UK; lower than in the US and elsewhere. Please post pics when you can. I believe the Grand Edition has different wheels here (19"/20" Forged AMG)

Wow your car looks stunning. I am in complete agreement and will wait. I have already ordered the spacers and no doubt I will fall in love with the multispokes!
Only thing I'm not so keen on is the larger lip spoiler..

Your Grand Edition is a totally different spec from ours though. Doesn't it have a quilted brown leather interior? And yes UK prices are very cheap and include all taxes.
Picking up the car went well. The car was in excellent condition apart from a tiny scratch which will more than likely polish out. Dealer will pay to fix if it doesn't. Everything about it is immaculate including the interior which worried me. Put on 200 miles driving it home which shows how poorly policed our stay at home order is!
Now just over 2500 miles. I'll begin the detail tomorrow. Allfortheunion, how good is Feynlab? I'd never heard of it but it certainly looks interesting. Might use V2 on mine.
