SL/R231: Active Blind Spot Assist Inoperable

Active Blind Spot Assist Inoperable
My 2013 SL550 with 37,675 miles on it has started showing the "Active Blind Spot Assist Inoperable" message upon start up. It started out doing this intermittently a few times last year. I took it to a local shop (not MB dealer) and he said it had to do with battery not being fully charged since I only drive the car occasionally and mostly shorter trips. He reprogrammed the car and installed a trickle charger. The problem went away for a short while but started to happen occasionally again. Now it is on every time I start the car. I've seen Blind Spot problems for other models but not for the R231.
Any thoughts about what might be causing this and possible repairs.
