How does it know??

I really like the fact that the SL catches you if you start to, or actually veer into the next lane by mistake. Little subtle reminders via the steering wheel at first and actual car correction when you really go to far.

But how does it know you have veered? As far as I can tell I see no outside cameras on the car. It can’t be any radar, because radar picks up objects not painted road lines.

So, how does it know and do you like the feature? I have seen posts that asked how to turn it off, which I would never do. I love it.

There are two cameras by the rearview mirror that reads the road. I personally do not like the lane keeping assist- many times when driving people tend to hug the inside of the road/lane- having the car force you back into the lane is frustrating. I also don't care for it on regular two lane roads especially when you come to a marked turn lane that shifts the drive lane to the side- If no one is there and you cheat the lines to drive straight the car forces you to zigzag with the road. I have that shut off on all our vehicles.

I turned off that option after a few weeks of ownership as it is a huge distraction. Also parallel parking. I have not needed to parallel park in over 10 years.

Your patience is admirable...I turned mine off on the way home from the dealership after taking delivery. It was totally obnoxious. I do otherwise like the specific car that I ended up with...nevertheless, I am still kicking myself for skipping over a very low mileage example because it did not have a Driver Assist Package. DUH! If I could go back in time and order my car the way I now know I would like it, I'd dump that package as well as the Soft-Close Doors, and ad ABC. But, it is what it is...

I have the lane assist on my 2014 C350 and I don't mind it. It rumbles the steering wheel when you cross a line on the road. On the SL, however, I turned it off because it actually seems to brake the car as well as rumble. If I could have rumble only, I'd be ok with it. You can disable it in the menu settings that you access with the buttons on the steering wheel.

You don't like the soft close doors? I swore I would get them on the next car I got, but this one does not have them. My wife can't seem to gently close doors.

Mine only rumbles initially (and I need to be fairly close to the line). If you ignore the rumble and get too close to the line, it will brake to move the car away from the line.

I don’t have any issues with the DA package and have it all enabled, it is rarely intercedes in my driving.

Perhaps my driving style is different as I’ve attended several defensive driver training courses over the years. A mixture of freebies with new cars, on the job safety training & I even paid for my own when I retired, just to get a refresher.

I worked in petro-chemical most of my career for the likes of Shell, ExxonMobil, Qatar Gas etc. They are all safety obsessed and even if you are going to be hiring a car on company business, you get sent on defensive driving training.
