What is your age?

Hello all,

Since we are driving high end models from MB, be it new, or pre-owned these cars are not what I would call cheap. These cars have a certain style and class to them that may be lost on the young crowds.

I’m curious what the average age is of the SL owner? I assume the majority will be in the middle age range +, but I could be wrong.

Do tell.

I’m as old as my tongue and slightly older than my teeth.

46+??? You need at least one more level in there, like 65+. Or maybe 46 to 65 and 66+. Lots of old guys here.

Heck, with 5500 comments, you've got to be old! That doesn't happen overnight.

The wife and I are both 69. I know a few people that also own an SL and they are in the same age group or slightly older.

Lol. I figured the + covered everything above 65 lol. You guys didn’t have to put your actual age lol, you could have just checked the poll box with your number..

So what do you guys think are the main reasons us old people are the ones getting the SL? Price? We are the last age groups walking around with taste? Lol Mid life crises? Or we are just old enough to do what the heck we want!

All of the above, but also outgrowing the "boy racer" mindset. I once owned a VW GTI new that I absolutely loved, until I got my Audi TT, until I got my SL. I never stopped loving those cars, I just kept changing my perspective.

I've always loved cars and have had four SLs in my life, including a 450sl I got in my early 30's. I think the reason our particular demographic likes them now is we're, generally, old enough to afford them, appreciate the craftsmanship, still love the power but also like being pampered At least that about sums it up for me.

After drooling over the 230-280SL’s for years, I finally got my first SL, a slightly used 1972 350SL when I was in my 20’s. Signal Red with “Bamboo” interior.

I, too, fell in love with the SL. But in 1972 I was just getting my learner's permit. 45 years later I got my first SL; a 2004 SL500. Red has always been my favorite color, but it doesn't always look good on every car. My other favorite color is black, which is so hard to keep clean looking. But being retired allows me time to keep her clean!

@Streamliner Do you still have the 350SL? That picture is of a car with never-ending beauty. Funny how far things have come. It has no passenger side mirror. I guess that was an option. Were the windows power or crank?

No, that car is long gone. Yes, hand crank windows. I bought that particular car, because it was red with that sort of “saddle” color interior. I just thought the car looked so good in that color combination. In 1979, I got my first new MB, a 450SL in the same colors. MUCH better car, but I did lament having to live with the big bumpers. I never kept any of my cars all that long, with the exception of the 2004 SL500, which I kept for 12 years. I only sold that car because I felt there was a distinct possibility that very costly & messy repairs to the ABC & hydraulic roof mechanism would be coming down the line and the idea of someone tearing into my pristine beauty was too much to think about. Here’s a photo of the underside just before I sold it. 12 years old! Original tires!

LOL! You could eat off the bottom of that thing. That was the same Mars Red that my 2004 was. I had gotten mine from a co-worker who had it dealer serviced, garaged, and drove only on Sundays. It was 13 years old and just barely 50,000 miles. I had to replace the tires because of age and cracking.

I got rid of it in favor of my black 2015 SL400 for the same reasons. One of the lines at the rear abc valve block had developed a leak which I couldn't find. I had already rebuilt the front abc block early on. And I replaced the rear one with a "remanufactured" one from China off of ebay -- big mistake. Anyway, with about 105,000 miles on the car, I figured it was time to replace it. Plus, I really liked some of the technology with newer models, and that it did not have ABC. ABC is amazing, but the older cars did have problems. I was waiting for the tandem pump to go out. I always feared that I would blow a hose or something really expensive when I was on vacation or something.
