SL/R231: Book on the SL R231

Well, the idea that the AMG versions of the R231’s were “serious sports cars,” doesn’t make any sense to me. Even that crazy “Black Series” coupe they did a few years back would have its clock cleaned on the track by any number of true sports cars. R231’s are just way too heavy. I think most everyone here would agree that our 231’s are not sports cars, but are one of the finest and most luxurious grand touring cars ever produced. Still, I’m glad someone has written such a book and I will look for it.

I bought the book because I heard that this author included data on production numbers. This new edition for the R231 doesn't have any data to speak of. He apologizes for that saying that MB would not supply it this time around.
I've also noticed that MB removed pre-facelift R231 production counts from their archive, at least for the SL65.

They may not be a sportscar in the true sense of the word, but if you drive one, you'll be sold on it! I've owned SL600 V12 twin turbo with a Renntech tune, a SL550 and an SL55 AMG. And love them all. before that, SL500 R129 and 450SLC Coupe R107. All fantastic cars, also owned Porsches Jaguar, etc, and Maserati too. Jaguar was fun at high speeds on highways, Porsche felt glued to the road. I really appreciate how great Mercedes ABC is in the R230s, I doubt it's any different in the R231. Compared to Maserati's Skyhook suspension, give me the Benz any day.
