Are genuine ones from Mercedes in the US much more expensive than rock auto ones?

Depends on where you buy. The genuine plugs are cheaper on Pelican Parts, but not elsewhere.

For comparison, 8 plugs from Mercedes Newcastle (UK) are £90.84.

So, that's a little cheaper than here. I'm sure getting them from the dealer here will be $50 EACH!!!

OK. I think I got it. Look at each bank and the 12 o'clock position, I.e. the injector is directly above each spark plug?

Much simpler on our engines. That's the benefit of a V6 over a V8. Plus, the guy wanted to be exact with his indexing. As long as you are within +/- 45° of the fuel injector, you're good.
