SL550 to AMG B06 Big Brake Conversion

I was browsing the photo thread on this forum and noticed the AMG Big Brake Conversion that @crcconsulting completed on his 2013 SL 550. I am wanting to install this brake system on my 2014 SL 550 and was wondering if anybody else had installed this brake system on their car.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

If your SL550 needs front and (rear) rotors and brakes, or anyone just interested in doing a conversion to the 390mm Front and 360mm B06

Here’s a couple good threads,
See post #6

Though this excellent thread covers Ceramic Conversion, it also covers some R231 brake basics.

The calipers and parts are still available from Mercedes.

or

https://www.mbonlineparts.com/v-2015...nt-wheel-brake

But, If you chose to go the used route, you’ll need scour either eBay or the wrecking yards that specialize in MB parts. They actually are readily available. You should TRY to pay as close to $1000 for front and rear calipers. Be patient and get as clean of a set as possible. Sometimes you get lucky. I found an almost new set for $800.00. The listing was horribly misspelt and had only one picture of the rear caliper

Best to familiarize yourself with the visual aspects/details of the parts required for the conversion very well. The W222 and R231 AMG cars share the same F&R calipers. I see them on eBay all the time. There are by far, more S63 brakes sets that come up than SL63’s. Familiarity with the parts are where this will pay off as there are MANY listings that are erroneously listed as the correct parts so be careful! Also I wouldn’t get a set that’s been discolored significantly as that’s a sign of excessive heat (probably beat on track or worse &#128533

I would not buy the (front) calipers without brackets either as the cost to source them will make the conversion costs escalate quickly, but even more importantly, are not available from Mercedes (or Brembo) separately!

I personally would never buy used rotors….

Brembo is OEM supplier, so I went with the floating AMG Black Brembo front Disc and the Brembo 360mm non floating rear. Super cheap at $85.00 each. The rears really are consumables, as they typically wear at twice the rate as the fronts in these traction control cars. Here’s some pertinent disc/brake info:

hope this helps,

Good Luck!

AMG (B06) Front and Rear Brakes.

Rear AMG (B06) 360mm TRW Brakes

Big brakes

I put the big brakes on my 13 SL 550
I purchased calipers with brackets on ebay
sand blasted them and painted with epoxy primer then the burnt orange color which I have the formula for if you go that way. Then bought the AMG decals on eBay. After they were on I cleared them. They are bolt on. No issues. But you do have to put AMG front backing plates. The original ones are obviously to small
I will post some pics
I did go with 19” AMG front rims and 20” in the rear

The backing plates are an interesting design, maybe worth looking at a little closer…

I was thinking the same when I did mine (replacing), but believe that larger backing plate (2nd pic) is primarily designed for the carbon brakes. ie to get and KEEP heat in the (carbon) disc.

The backing plates on the SL550 steel brakes (1st pic) is nicely vented and includes an TWO air deflector on the upper and lower control arms to deflect fresh cool air into the vents on the backing plate. (3rd pic). I find it interesting they would invest the extra costs/parts for the SL550 vents and not bother with the AMG cars? The only reason I can think that they didn’t do that on the AMG cars, is it’s probably primarily designed to keep in heat, and protect the carbon rotors. Apparently AMG didn’t bother with vents for the steel brakes

For perspective, also see the mini backing plates (that are used primarily to protect ball joints from direct brake heat) on some Steel GM high performance brake packages. (last pic)

In the end, I doubt it will make a difference as most of us will probably never track our cars or push them that hard. (and if this was a customer car I would install the correct backing plates) But the smaller backing plate will result in a cooler rotor especially with the extra air deflectors on the SL550.

Vented SL550 Backing Plate.

can you tell me if there is a part number stamped on those 2 brake ducts? I have a sl63 I’m looking to track and would love the additional cooling those ducts would provide.
