SL550 Wheel Size and Offset Help

Hello,

I'm soon to be in the market for a new car and ever since I was young the SL550 has been a dream car. While the R230 was the one I wanted when I first was driving I personally dont want the challenge of a 2008 or older car or from what ive heard ABC issues with them.

So instead I was looking at the R231 models and found a issue while looking up reviews and ones for sale. From what I've heard the 19" wheels have trouble with certain speeds when it comes to comfort and some owners switched the wheels out to 18" ones. While looking at used models I've thought of doing the same if they have the 19" wheels but also I plan to not use the stock wheels even if 18" due to how the local weather would get them dirty near daily and how bad the roads are with giant pot holes appearing and not getting fixed for months. I would hate to accidentally damage some stock wheels and would rather keep them for occasions like conventions or meets that I could plan for.

This leads to my issue. Online on wheel stores when I put in lets say the 2013 model since I've seen a few of those for sale (although also looking at the SL450 2017-2020). Stores are recommending for 18" to do a staggered 18x8.5 in the front and a 18x9.5 in the back which is all well and good. They also recommend for tires 255/40ZR18 in the front and 285/35ZR18 in back. Which again seems correct based on what ive found on sites like for the SL550 https://www.wheel-size.com/size/mercedes/sl-class/2013/#region-usdm but on the shop sites they are recommending the offsets of 25+ to 35+ for front and rear. But sites like linked above say the listed offsets for 18" front are 33.5 - 37.5 while rear are 45.5 - 49.5 which seem wildly off from what the wheel shops are suggesting. I am giving the parameters of being on stock suspension height and no rubbing or scraping allowed when looking for wheels but that is giving me results like offsets 30+ in front and 35+ in rear for wheels like the ESR RF15 or just 35+ offset for both front and rear on the Aodhan AFF7.
I've always used stock wheels on my last 3 cars but would like to keep these stocks preserved so this is nee to me.

I guess my two main questions is one does the 18" over 19" wheels thing hold true? Is 18" just a smoother ride at most speeds? And two what are the offsets supposed to be? Are the two example wheels fine or do i need to be exactly within the rage on sites like wheelsize which I assume is going off some brand manual based on how specific they are. If those wheels/offsets wouldn't work what would you recoomwnd and/orwhat offsets

Thank you for your time.

I have some experience here with 19's and 18's and ABC suspension.

Here are some things to keep in mind. If you find one with 18's it most likely will not have the bigger Painted Brembo calipers and smaller non slotted and drilled rotors so there is one reason to consider it's not something most consider.

You will most likely not notice the harshness between 18 and 19's also the 18's look way too small on the car, They can safely fil 20's in the same slot. My r231 with ABC came with 18's and the crappier calipers and rotors. I found someone selling a set of the 19 AMG and put them on. You own't notice anything negative with the 19's You might be able to tell a difference in the tire.

ABC suspension is AMAZING! I will not buy another a r231 without it. Do your research, understand how it works, how to diagnose symptoms, how to replace the CHF 11s fluid and filter, the Vibration Damper (a 10 minute super easy replacement!) I have TWO r231 2013's one with ABC and one without. The ABC is without question noght and day different and better than any car I have ever driven.

To me, 18's are a waste of time. The look too small and you want it to look as nice from this point forward. in 2013 they were even outdated. as long as you are 255-35-19 in front and 285 or 295-230-19 in the rear, you are good to go. I think offset is 35 front and 49 rear with a 66.6 hub diameter 5x112 you are good. you can even use 5mm to 10mm wheel spacers and be fine to make the stance look better.

Do not be afraid of ABC on r231's ALL AMG SL63's come with ABC! It works and works WELL!
Do not be afraid of the 19's either!

Thanks, Ryan
