SL/R231: Fractured logos from side view mirror projectors
Given that my test drives happened during daylight hours, didn't noticed that my car has... "unique" logos that it projects onto the street in the evenings until after taking delivery and eventually driving in the dark!
I believe the projection is supposed to look like this (from GLS):
Haven't decided yet whether this is something that I want to "fix" but it seems like it would be a relatively inexpensive ($130ish in parts?) fix and just hoping for some confirmation on part numbers and process...
Found these threads from 2023 and 2020 that reference part numbers:
https://mbworld.org/forums/sl-class-...ml#post8809121
https://mbworld.org/forums/sl-class-...r172-r231.html
As best as I can tell, the exact replacement parts for my car would be the the same as those from the first above post:
A23181046009775 / A23181047009775 (last 4 digits being the color code for IRIDIUM)
The ones referenced in the 2020 post appear to be the older style (A2318101300XXXX / A2318101400XXXX where XXXX is the color code) that projects logo with MERCEDES BENZ text above and below the logo as shown in the first post.
@ThatsMyDawg also posted a photo of another style that has the "Mercedes-Benz" text next to the logo. (don't recall seeing part numbers)
I also found an older part # A1728100115XXXX / A1728100115XXXX that might be just side view mirror illumination WITHOUT a logo (or maybe a different logo?)? Can anyone confirm?
Anyway, debating here whether I want to a) live with the "unique" projections, b) restore the car to original function, or c) replace with non-logo illumination (if the oldest part numbers?)... any input welcome!
BTW, @crconsulting (or anyone else?) would you happen to have the WIS instructions on how to replace the side mirror cover trim?
A poster in the older thread provided following instructions but I'm slightly afraid of breaking something!:
This is a description from a German site
Installation is as follows:
- Swing the mirror all the way down and pull it off from above, if necessary slightly raise the mirror holder with a hoe
- The mirror heater and if necessary. Disconnect the blind spot warning cable
- Loosen two small screws that fix the lower part
- Remove the upper part of the mirror by loosening the latch over the motor (this is a bit difficult if you have no experience)
- Disconnect the plug connection of the previous LED from the lower part of the mirror
- Now clip out the lower part of the mirror and remove it
- Clip in the new mirror base, screw in two screws and create the wiring (plugs fit before / after 1: 1)
- Put the upper part of the mirror back on, here attention with regard to the plug of the turn signal lamp
- Restore the mirror wiring and reinsert the mirror
Time expenditure:
It took me about 25 minutes, but I had no experience with mirror removal.
Finished.
