After a long wait my SL55 arrived. After it went thru PDI I spent about an hour testing everything out and going on a few test drives. I bought a brand new Carrera S 3 months ago when I was not sure when the SL was going to arrive. I was able to get the Porsche at MSRP and knew I could get my money back. I ended up leaving the dealership with the Porsche and told them that I need to sleep on it and make my decision on whether I will be trading the Porsche on the SL. My initial thoughts are the Porsche is a sexier looking car and will hold its value better than the SL. The SL has much more comfortable seats and a softer ride. There is significant wind noise in the SL at 70 mph but overall it is not that much quieter than the Porsche. Below are pictures of the SL as well as the Porsche
Great looking cars! That red on the SL looks very good. I know some others have complained about wind noise but I have not found that to be a problem on mine. I was just on the freeway in LA for about an hour at various speeds but I didn't find the wind noise to be bothersome. I guess it could be how sensitive one is to it all. Having had a couple of convertibles including my AMG GTC for three years I think the wind noise actually in the GTC was more than the SL63 that I drive. But besides, most of the time for me the top is down. The only reason I had the top up today was really to test the wind noise.

this will be a 90% top up for me and a semi-daily drive. I have another hard top convertible for top down weather. The wind noise was directly next to my left ear and started at 65 and was more pronounced at 70. It is just a design of the contact between the window and top. Below 65 it is quiet and less road noise than the Porsche.
I do like the Porsche but I love my SL so far; I have a preexisting order for a Turbo S Cab from last year but who knows when that will get picked up, if ever; it was for a Gentian Blue like my daily Panamera GTS; Guess we'll see what the next year brings but for now gonna love my 63

Are you daily driving you 63? One thing that may change the ride a little on the SL is the dealer still had the tires inflated for transport. They were 40 and 42 and I think the recommendations were 32/35. This would soften the ride some and make it more enjoyable for daily. The Porsche is lowered to 31/33 which greatly improved the ride but you still feel every bump and crack in the pavement. (I miss my S550 coupe when it comes to soft ride).

Not daily driving the SL; I didnt check the tire pressure yet but I remember someone noting the pressures were higher with delivery and lowered them to the 30's; I'll do that this week; next, is getting Xpel Ultimate and ceramic coating on the car and tint.

To be fair, we are comparing a coupe and a convertible, and without any doubt "top down" is the sunny side of the SL.
I have been thinking about this a bit and I really can't come with any convertible that looks better with the top up rather than top down.
The closes I can come is a Ferrari Spyder (maybe I am biased because of my 458 spyder).
So, comparing a Porsche Coupe against the SL top down it becomes a matter of different rather than better - imo.
The analogy all changed when the SL went to soft top. Most of the hard top convertibles look as good as their coupe counterpart and many are hard to tell the difference.
when it comes to soft tops I fully agree, they will always look better with the top down.
I made my decision and let the dealer know I was going to pass on the car. It appears that they market is not going to be as strong as the dealers had hoped and a lot of people who predicted msrp or discounts are going to be correct. If I didn’t already have another convertible this would be a great second car to own. So for now the Porsche stays.
It's a matter of personal choice, and to me the SL63 with the top down is an absolute stunner that is far superior in looks to the 911. And I agree with Wolfman that the 992 911 is just another 911 in the sea of 911' - they are everywhere. I've had both, and both are great cars, so again, personal choice. But my SL63 continues to get great turnaround looks and thumbs up wherever I go, partly of course that it is so new and no one has seen them yet. But also because this is a great design. By the way, I'm 4 weeks into it and I have yet to have any of the wind noise issues with the top closed at app. 70 mph that several are complaining about. I've had it above 90 mph and no issues with wind noise, so maybe it's just luck of the draw.
I love the vehicle so far and we are just moving into top down weather here in Texas. So far the only thing that I don't like is the stupid manual folding windscreen. It doesn't do much good, and it does not fully fit into the slots on the side - seems to be a little short, i.e. not quite wide enough. I'm folding it back up and putting it in the trunk.
Ya gotta admit that Porsche does do a good job of making them look different from year to year. But!

The SL is a great looking car, and a proper AMG, for better and for worse. The thuggy V8, clunky MCT, and some turbo lag compared to the new I-6 models dates the drivetrain, and along with the tall sills adds to the feeling of a bigger car than it is. The 992 feels smaller than it is and, in coupe form weighing ~1,000lbs less, is just more nimble and fun. The tech is not at all video-gamey, is more intuitive, and easier to use with some buttons and knobs, the driving position is fantastic...steering, brakes, PDK...I won't go on...it's a different kind of car. Driving it hard makes you feel very special, even if nobody else notices.

I figured out how to do the folding windscreen. It does work properly - really! Re-read pages 82-84 in the overall useless manual. When I picked up the car a "delivery specialist" showed me how to get it to work. If the manual isn't enough let me know and I'll give detailed info. I know it seems too short but it really isn't. You have to pull the end of the springer piece all the out and while it is all the way "out" - that is pulled against the spring, then you slide the tip of the folding windscreen down into the side opening - and when it is inside then you release the slider and it locks in. Then same for the other side. - just pull the other side and do the same thing. It will go in.

Totally agree with John. The manual is useless and the same thing happened to me until I figured out the little trick of sliding the tip down first - then voila - and btw this screen is very effective.
I wish I was doing better at the game of life and in a situation to debate a gorgeous 911 and new AMG SL! Two beautiful machines, I'm certain you'll be more than content with either decision.

As a quick update it looks like my car that I passed on is being sold today with a 10 K ADM. The person that is buying it did not want to wait to order one and had no problem spending the 10 K to get some thing that was close to how he would want it and get it immediately. So I guess ADM are still happening.
