First service, recalls, batteries

I took my 2022 SL63 in for its first annual service today. The service included four outstanding recalls:

1. The wiring harness recall. My dealer provides a link to a video showing what they did to the car. My video included a section showing one of the panels under the car and you could see the harness through one of the inspection holes. The fix involved installing a cable tie in my case. So it would appear that dealers (or at least my dealer) have instructions on what to look for and how to fix it.

2. Software update for the retractable rear spoiler.

3. Providing an MB-branded CTEK battery maintainer (free).

4. The fuel impeller recall. My dealer has performed 4--5 of these already and has ordered the part(s) for mine. For those still waiting, this may help: the dealer asked that I bring the car in when the fuel level is about a quarter, but certainly less than 40%.

Ever since I got the car, I've been trying to figure out how many batteries it has; there's been much discussion on forums about charging the "front" battery and/or the "rear" battery to avoid critical battery issues. Past SLs, I know, have had a main "starter" battery and an "accessories" battery. I've pored over the parts diagrams for the SL63. The big old AGM battery under the trunk is obvious. There's no other battery in the parts lists or diagrams. I've verified with a multimeter that the positive charging terminal under the hood (under a flimsy plastic hinged cover) is directly connected to the positive terminal of the AGM battery under the trunk. The negative charging/jump post under the hood is, of course, connected to the same ground as the negative terminal of the AGM battery under the trunk. So it makes no difference if you charge/trickle/maintain the battery using the terminals under the hood or on the battery under the trunk. The user manual recommends using the terminals under the hood for jump starting, which is likely a safety measure to avoid sparking near the battery that's under the trunk.

I asked two techs at my dealer about the number of batteries and, sadly, neither of them knew. If anyone has a photo of the possible mythical front battery, I'd love to see it.

Thanks!
