84 380sl single or double row timing chain?

I just bought an 84 380sl and was told that all 84s came with double row timing chains. Is that true?

Also, excuse my ignorance, but does this car have a timing BELT as well? Or does the timing CHAIN perform that function?

Thanks in advance!

1984 should be a double-row... Take the oil cap off, insert a dental mirror and shine a flashlight in the port. You should be able to manipulate the mirror and light in such a way as to see the chain. Otherwise, remove a valve cover to be sure.

There is no timing belt. All timing functions are accomplished via the chain.

Hope this helps. If you navigate to mercedes shop . com (remove the spaces) in the DIY section, you will find a picture of the dental mirror trick.

Timing chain on 84sl

I just replaced the timing chain on my 1984 sl.Yes there is a double chain but they say the useful life of the chain is 100,000.My car has 89,000 miles and I did not want to take any chances having just restored it.
