'74 450 SL
I'm new at this...
...but my '74 starts a tad roughly. It kicks over and then revs itself up to 2000rpm or so over and over for several minutes. I usually give it a little gas, so it stays at 2000rpm for a while and then give it a little more gas to see if it will rev down before putting it in gear. I just bought this car in May and have not cold started others of the same era. Any comments?...is this normal?

Yes, Mine runs quite well once warmed up. The operating temp is about 2/3 to 3/4 up the scale (I cannot recall the exact value). I'm sure mine needs some professional attention...lots of oil smoke and the smell of it when hot. It's not getting used overmuch now and I plan to have it in the shop by the end of the summer.
Interstingly, the other day I had to drive it because my daily driver was in for service, and it warmed up rather normally. No revving up & down; it held steady at about 2000rpm for a while and then did fine after a few minutes idling at that level.
