Oil Change
HELLO I am new to this forum found it today. I have bought my first Mercedes a 1979 450 SL. I would like to change the oil right away. I would like to know what weight is best and whether to use regular or synthetic. Also how many quarts it holds. The car has 145,000 miles on it and runs great. I bought it from the original owner. I don't have an owners manual yet. Help"

Congratulations on your 'new to you' Mercedes. You'll love it! Based on what you said about it running so well now that it's nicely broken in, I'd stick with whatever the previous owner was using...its apparently worked. If you got the service records with the car, oil weight/type should also be noted. God luck with the car and have fun!

'74 450 SL
FWIW, I've been told to use 20w50 in summer...
My mechanic (factory trained on 450SL in 1974) and my friend Brandon (who runs Kleemann USA) have advised me to use 20w50 in my '74 450SL.
I cannot recall the capacity of the oil system, but the owner's manual should provide such specs.
Good luck with your new ride!
