Is the 560 fuel injected or carbed?

I just bought an '87 560SL and was wondering if this is fuel injected or carbed? I can see no injectors, but I do see some tiny metal tubes going in the top of the manifold, I guessing this may be direct fuel injected right into the cylinder like the diesel models, is that correct?

Also, where is the engine computer located and does anyone do any reprogramming of these? Reason I ask is I've hacked the code in several of my vehicles and have reprogrammed them for performance / fuel economy using specific editors for the car model.

Yes it is fuel injected. It uses a Bosch CIS-E system which includes a fuel distributor and individual mechanical injectors. The thin tubes are the lines to the injectors. If you remove the air cleaner assembly (two nuts and a few hoses) you will see it. The "computer" is a Bosch KE Jetronic. Not as sophisticated as modern electronic systems. Never heard of anyone modifying it. I believe it is under the dash near the glove compartment, not positive, maybe under the passenger carpet at firewall.

Thanks for the info. I'm finding it difficult to find much mechanical / repair info on these cars on the net. I'm a pretty advanced shade tree mechanic on most of my cars. Myturbo Buick I've had 16 years, knew nothing about them then, now I can pretty much do anything myself on it, including reflashing the computer changing timing, fueling, boost, etc. I have a lift in my garage so doing anything on the car is a diy project for me and just about any repair is documented on the net somewhere..same for my LT1 cars... Now if I can crack this SL

There are a few good forums out there where technical information and DIY stuff exists. A good one is:
http://www.mercedesshop.com/shopforum/index.php
You can go to the SL Forum and do searches, also look for the archives.
Also:
http://www.benzworld.org/forums/merc...adster-forums/

Another good reference is:

Good Luck!

Those are perfect! Just what I was looking for, looks to be very mechanically oriented, especially that diy shops one.
Thank you very much for the links.
