Keep in mind that long distance diagnosis sucks, but...
Sounds like a fuel delivery issue to me. The car starts off of the cold start injector which operates electrically, but for one reason or another, no fuel is coming from the regular injectors.
Has it run since the distributor cap & coil were replaced and has anything else been messed with?

I agree with the
guy above. It could be the fuel pump relay, Idle control relay, or a few other things. Sounds like you are not getting fuel pressure after the initial start. If the car sat for along time the fuel distributor could be dirty or varnished and stuck.
