Mobil one oil
My new 78 450sl has 135000 miles, the previous owner has used Mobil one oil for the last ten years. pulling the dipstick reveals very clean oil. Not due for a change for 1000 miles. Now the problem, Is this oil ok to continue with, or is it better to go with my favorite, Castrol.

Mobil one is a great oil, a synthetic oil which will protect the engine very well and I guess it's been on it for quite some time. I guess if you went with a Castrol synthetic it would be ok, but I wonder why?

+1 for Mobil 1. Used throughout the life of our old BMW e28 M5. Inside the engine was nearly new at 175k miles even with 10k change intervals. I switched after seeing too many engines totally sludged up that used Castrol GTX changed every 3k miles.

I'm impressed that the PO used Mobil 1 for ten years and the motor did not start leaking. Normally these old SL motors that have run 100K+ miles on conventional oil start leaking when switched over to the thinner M1.
Both the local dealer and my independent shop recommend sticking with conventional oil for my 87 560SL. (104K miles)

My '82 had M1 in it when I purchased it so I've continued with no issues.
