380 Sl 1983 Instrument Cluster

Need some help to trouble shoot the instruments mainly Fuel Oil and temp needles flick when the indicators , or hazzard, are worse when at night when main beam or dip is used. The problem was intermittant but now its most of the time. I have removed Lights indicators and checked grounding and refitted. I now thinking I have to dive into the Dash Board oh what joy. Hopping you can help Charlie in Italy

I can pretty much assure you it's a grounding issue. There's a trace on the cluster PCB that has a history of breaking. If you run an additional ground wire from the cluster to a chassis ground (helps to put a quick connect in the wire) I believe you'll be good to go.

Here's a post with a pic.

Go to post #2 of the thread I listed earlier for instructions on removal of the cluster.

It would be a good opportunity to replace bulbs and do a little housekeeping while you're in there.

Instrument custer grounding

Alan, thanks I'm good to go now, the cluster link to the step by step photos is excellent better than a manual, good idea to do some spring cleaning as well while I have the cluster out. Many thanks will let you know the outcome. Charlie

Great

Hold onto the link to that thread. Your next trip in there will probably be when your odometer eventually quits.

2000 miles across europe

Alan
Just got back from my annual "Boy Run" Italy, Swiss, France, Germany and UK plus return back to Italy all in 48hours ( 24hrs rest for a few days then return) lots of driving 3500Kms about 2000miles not a peep from the car and the instruments all worked perfectly so I think the road test was a pass, many thank for the help. Oh yes, the odometer recorded about half the milage so next job is to source the gears and replace.....Charlie

Replacing the cluster gears will be a snap.
