2005 E500 Wagon, 1982 500SL Euro
New owner of an 82' SL 500.

Hello everyone. I am a proud 2nd owner of a 1982 SL 500 (Euro spec). I just received my CA title in the mail so I can say its officially mine.

It belonged to a man who purchased it new in 1982. He recently passed and I was happy to take it off of the hands of the estate.

It has every receipt and service going back to the original import papers.

120,000 miles. Garage kept. Non-smoker.

Paint is good-very good. Has some rock chips and a few minor scratches. All original.

Needs springs and shocks all around and a steering dampener.

Runs good. Looks great.

Drivers seat springs are totally shot. (Please advise on how to improve or repair.)

Took it to 2 independent MB reapir shops. Both spoke of shocks/springs. One thought the intake manifold needed new gaskets.

Thanks for listening.

Automatic transmission question:

I put the transmission in "L" and floored it, thinking I would be able to red line it. Instead at approx 4k RPM it shifted into second. Shouldn't it stay in first gear?

Can someone give me a quick explanation on what to expect if I "manually" shift my automatic?

Best way to get a 0-60 sprint accomplished.....

Sorry, I hadnt updated my profile to reflect my 1982 sl500 with 120,000 miles and remove my old 1993 300D with 385,000 miles.

No biggie, but you'll sound more knowledgable if you say you have a 500SL which you do, rather than an SL500 which you do not.

You can manually pull it down into 1st gear, then shift back to drive and it will stay in first for a hard launch for a 0-60 run. I would let it shift auto until you are more familiar with the car, because they are serious about the redline. An over-rev can compromise the timing chain, etc. Not sure why it shifted out on you though. Mine will go all the way to the redline in 1st and each gear after.

As far as 0-60, you may not be impressed. Even my 560SL is just not geared for acceleration. OVER 60, and it's a different story.

Hope you enjoy the car. Good luck with it.

I found my kickdown covered up by my carpet. What I "thought" was kickdown , wasn't...

It still wont redline in 1st, but thru the other gears it will. (Only took it to approx 85 mph.)

Much better than plopping the gear shifter thu the gears.

Just got her back with the suspension redone. (4 springs, shocks, steering stabilizer, tierod kit and front brakes rebuilt.

AWESOME. Even my mechanic is tickled pink from the difference with the new suspension parts.

My next things to fix is the intermittent high idle and high temp readings.

My temp will rise to approx 105c while sitting at a red light on a cool evening. (Shouldnt it stay around 85c?)

The high idle doesnt seem to have any particular pattern to when it wants to show up.

I'd be interested to know where you got the springs. Were they special order? As far as the temp, check your fan clutch. I had the same issue. Replaced the fan clutch and no issues since.

As far as the early shift-out, it might be a speed sensor issue. I know some of the 107's have a wheel speed sensor that tells the transmission when to shift. You deal with this when installing one of those first-gear-start modules. Find someone that really knows the 107's and they'll know a lot more than I do.

When you get ready to sell the car, make sure you mention this.

I personally would not want to buy it, knowing the above..........

For fun I watched a few 0-60 runs on YouTube.com
It seems common for these to shift into 2nd around 4500-5000 rpm

So mine may not be that far off from what it should be.
