1973 Mercedes 450SL
Ignition/Key Question
So I bought a nice looking 450SL from a mechanics' lien auction, and although the car didn't run it did look quite nice. It didn't run because it didn't have a key, which I hoped would be something I could get by using the VIN. Unfortunately, the VIN on the radiator support is ground down, and it looks like it is for a 280, whereas I have a V8 in my Mercedes. I have looked at many locations for a VIN (the title is 235847121, though I think that was assigned by the local troopers), and have not been able to find anything on the firewall, A-pillars, etc., and was wondering if there was a way to get one of the keys made for this vehicle without having the VIN, or if anyone has a good write up on how to change out the ignition switch? Thanks.

Replacing the lock cylinder without a key is very difficult so finding the vin and ordering a new key would be very helpful.
The number on the radiator support is the chassis number IIRC. The vin is normally on the drivers windshield pillar, visable through the windshield. If not there, I recomment contacting the Mercedes Classic Center in California for suggestions on finding other possible vin locations.
