Broken Upper timing chain Guides
Hello, In my 87 560SL I am replacing the timing chain and guides, the right side was broken and the pice missing, the left is broken, but the broken piece is missing.
1) Both upper guides (part#117 052 09 16) have broken at the inner pin Hole. the right side The inner pin is there but the inner half of the guide is missing.
This is the broken one I removed
You can see where the pin is still in place
This is the left side I haven't removed yet, but you can tell by the gap between the guide and the chain that the other end must be broken.
This is a better picture of the left side showing the angle of the guide better
Has anyone seen this? what's your opinions on if I should take the timing cover off to make sure there isn't some remnants left behind?
The car ran excellent but I did get a chain slap once in a while.

This is a well known flaw in the 107 V/8s after '73. To remove the front cover either front subframe or the engine has to be removed. That is because the oil pan has to be dropped. Lots of info. on BW http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r-c107-sl-slc-class/
