Speedometer Cable Noise?

I have a noise coming from what seems to be the speedometer cable. The noise increases with speed and slows down and eventually comes to a stop when the car stops. It is a sort of a soft clicking noise. I have a 1985 280SL Euro with auto trans. Any ideas? Thanks!

The '85 280SL does not have a speedometer cable. It is electronic. The sender is connected to the transmission. It could be the odometer gears.

Here is how to replace the gears. http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r-c1...-tutorial.html The most difficult part is removing the steering wheel.
