Manual Shifter Too Far Back on 240D & 300Ds?

Recently drove a 240D 4-speed and when the seat was adjusted for my 30" inseam, the shifter lever was almost at the middle of the seat bottom when shifting to 2nd and 4th, making for slightly awkward shifts. I assume the same situation exists for the Euro 300D with a stick. Anyone else notice this? Seems like the placement of the opening in the floor is a few inches too far rearward.
