Looking at Euro 280SL and not sure what this is

I am looking at a 1985 Euro 280SL and it makes an awful noise when the AC is going. It sounds as if it is the item in the very left (passenger in US) front corner under the bonnet. It has a belt on it and appears connected to what I suppose may be the compressor next to it. Does anyone know what it is? Estimate of what it takes to replace it? Is it possibly a novice DIY job or if needed what a garage may charge to do it.

Also - I have seen pics online of other Euro 280SL models and they don't appear to have that part and instead there is a liquid tank that appears to be a washer tank. Is that right? Anything odd looking here to you?

Thank you for your input

1985 280LS Euro
No idea, could be some kind of air pump. My 85 Euro 280SL has the washer fluid tank there as you described.

A.I.R. pump

Apparently it is a pump that was installed to make the Euro version US eligible for emissions. It warms up the catalyst in the converter - obviously not required today since the car is old but that is what it is.

My '74 Corvette also had this pump, but all it did was to dilute the exhaust gases as they came out of the exhaust manifold to better pass emissions. Don't think it warmed up the catalyst in the converter though. Also, that yellow tank in the picture seems like the radiator overflow tank.
