1976 450sl Fuel injectors/head gasket

Just replaced my newly purchased 1976 450sl fuel injectors and could not believe that the car ran at all (let alone fairly well) with the cracked sleeves and gummed up injectors. Most sleeves were loose enough to lift out by hand. Clearly the originals. Replacement was straight forward. Upon restarting the engine I soon developed a plume of white smoke I did not have before. First thought, head gasket of course, but could I possibly have stressed the gasket enough w/ new TIGHT fuel injectors to blow it? I imagine the air/fuel mixture was compensating for the leaks in the injectors, but could the mixture create a plume like that?
