Gas Light Broken?

Just purchased a 1987 560sl and have not refueled it since the last owner was generous enough to fill up the gas tank before picking it up.
I'm waiting for the light to turn on to refuel with a few gallons and drive till the light turns back on so I can get a rough estimate of my MPG.
My concern is that the refuel light is broken and does not illuminate. See picture of the gas gauge for reference.

My question is at what point in the gauge does your gas light illuminate? Should I risk driving a bit more till it turns on? Thanks

I see three choices:
1. siphon or pump your tank until it is empty, see if the light comes on. If it does, add gas until it goes out. I bought an electric fuel pump an a long fuel line for about $30, the beauty of this is you get all the crud out of your fuel tank..

2. check the fuel capacity in the literature, fill the tank and with simple arithmatic figure out what level the light doesn't come on.

3. fuel up when yoou hit 1/2 tank and never have to worry about the light again.
