SL/R107: idle problems

idle problems
my 380sl starts and illes at 1000rpm in gear with the brake on it drops to 750rpm when you go to neutral rpm jumps to 1500 and takes several seconds before it drops back to 1000 my mechanic says leave it alone but if you go from reverse to drive in as you normally would it will spin the tires anyone have any ideas?

Could be vacuum or air idle valve or idle control unit. Not sure what your mechanic is thinking.. rpm's like that are going to beat your driveline to pieces over time, as well as put excess strain on the torque converter.
Start by checking the vacuum, I'm wagering you should have about 15 inches steady..
Check it off the back of the intake manifold, passengers side.
