I had a quick look, and yes they are expensive. Historically, MB would just replace the rubber insert on the blade, as opposed to replacing the entire blade, which is universal now. I don't even know if you can buy the inserts anymore.

At any rate, I would first start with making sure you can get the inserts somewhere, and then spend the big bucks on a decent set of blades so that you can have the look you want.

You got me to thinking now because I have never replaced the the wipers on my 560SL.

Pelican Parts has inserts. It looks like they are more expensive than the whole blade - maybe lasts longer?

I used to replace the inserts in the original blades but finally stored the original blades in a box and use Michelin blades that are readily available and about 1/3 the price.

I don't think they last any longer. I always used to buy the inserts for my W124s. At they time I think I paid about $5 at the dealer.

I did find and order some metal wipers on amazon for a reasonable price.

Try SLShop website. I bought my silver metal blades from them. They are in England. Cost was high but the blades are great and they send 2 set of new inserts.
I looked everywhere state side with no luck
