450SL Ignition Problem

My '75 450SL has started having an intermittent miss after warm up accompanied by wild spikes of the tach from zero to 5000 RPM NOT associated with engine RPM. I have already checked the rotor cap, rotor, wiring, and installed both a new coil and new transistorized ingnition control box with no apparent effect. Any idea what to check next?
Most all of the wiring under the hood is stiff with age but I can see no signs of a grounding problem.
