Bought 87 560sl, Speedometer Question
Love the car! The speedometer (mph and odometer) stopped working upon car being shipped. Any suggestions on troubleshooting?
Thanks!
Thanks!

this is common on older sl/slc .. speedo works odo and trip meter stop.. two main causes are 1. resetting trip meter while car is in motion can strip the small drive gear.. 2. the drive gear starts to slip on the shaft ( this is repairable but kinda tricky.. search a few other mb boards and you will find the instructions)
I would recomend having it professionaly repaired.. if you can remove the instrument cluster yourself it will save some cash.. beware of the airbag if you have one.
on the other hand if you leave it broken your car will stay low milage

It should use an inductive pick-up at the tranny. One can easily check for a bad transducer by pulling the end out of the transmission and have someone watch the speedometer as you strike it with a large screwdriver. The needle should abruptly move if the transducer is good. On the otherhand, if all is well with the transducer, then speedometer gears are screwed. If you should have someone rebuild it, such as GLI? or GDI? on the west coast, make sure you tell them to TAKE OUT the optomistic error and make it TRUE for the actual speed. They can, they didn't when I sent mine, I fussed, they said send it back, and I said I didn't want another 2 week turnaround.
