I dunno about 80K cars.. Maybe 80K cars that were ONCE 80K, but once they got to the kids they were a few years old and 50-60K. I rarely see someone under 23-25 with a car over $50-60K. RARELY. Even on the Westside, or in Newport Beach....

Actually I think Mr. Gates is doing the right thing and NOT leaving his kids his giant fortune... I see his son in a 3-series.

I hadn't looked at this thread since I posted the first response.

After reading these posts, it looks like most SL55 drivers are a bunch of kids that either inherited trust funds or businesses. Yikes!! The only thing my parents gave me was a hard time! The entire student parking lot at my professional school wasn't worth $80K!!

Kinda strange that ALL the SL55 drivers I know aren't under 30, and neither are the ones that I see on the road. I had to bust my rear to get my first Porsche by the time I was 28 and my first Ferrari by 30. Judgeing by this group....I did it all wrong. Either that or there are a bunch of dreamers with nothing else to do but BS on the web. Either way, enjoy your cars!

With the exception of my 35 year old business partner who has a 2004 SL55, at 39 I've yet to meet with any SL55/65 owner younger than me. A fact that I don't find to be very odd...

Enjoy your cars.

Good to hear from you Ian! I have had the same experience as you. I have never met anyone under 30 with an SL55. I always thought it quite unusual for 20 somethings to be wanting SL Mercs.

Have fun and pass the Geritol!!

Agreed. If I could have afforded one in my 20's I think I would have gone w/ a 911 and saved the extra coin for beer... That said, in my 20's w/ a MBA in hand - I was still struggling to make payments on a '86 Honda Accord and often it was a choice between gas OR beer!

Probably NOT an exact science, but from a affordibility stand point, I always felt I needed to be making about 2x the price of the car a year to financially afford it (that's really not a scalable analysis by any means). Though I'm sure it's been the case, to be able to afford a $125K car in your 20's simply amazes me.

Ditto!!

In my 20's I was so broke I couldn't pay attention! I was making payments on a '79 Fiat X 1/9! Just thinking about having to make payments on an $8K car, and these guys are buying million dollar houses for cash, SL55s, etc. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Ferrari.

Oh Ingere a man who like Ferraris. I was looking at their site recently thinking what was a nice car...What would u suggest is a nice but not over the top money wise Ferrari nowadays? I am slightly worried that they look a bit dated compared to the Aston Martins I have to say. Would be interested to hear your thoughts. As for the recent postings about age ...I agree - I always thought an SL was for when you were in 30-40 age group to have one in 20s is truely remarkable. I have only just brought my first car a year ago and I'm on a decent wage - how these young kids afford an SL unless it is on hire purchase I have no idea.

There was one kid that posted about a 'trust fund'. The only thing my parents showed me was the door!! God bless 'em...I hope they appreciate what they have.

Anyway, Ferrari's......yeah....I guess I have been fortunate enough to indulge a little.

I think that the best value in a Ferrari as far as a modern car goes is a 348. It is ageing quite well. I think it still looks good, and the performance is reasonable.........and the sound is of course......brilliant!!! Autocar did A piece about value exotics...and ranked the 348 pretty high.

The only downside is servicing costs are a bit pricey. There are some good independents in the UK where you can have quality work done at a decent price. 308/328 servicing costs should be substantially less as the engine doesn't have to come out for a major service.

Let me know if you have any other questions.......

Why are you bragging about your nice house "all paid off" as if you have so much sweat equity in it. You didn't pay it off. Come clean young man.

Coming into this thread a bit late folks.

Got my mine last year while I was still 33. Have to say in this neck of the woods I'm pretty much the youngest. Mind you I remember one Saturday only weeks after getting mine, seeing a young 'ethnic' fellow (ok to me he looked like a punk, but I'm being polite ), not from my area, driving an all too slammed looking SL55. We're talking OTT suspension drop here, didn't look right at all. It seemed more than a bit suspect to me actually, as I didn't see it long enough to rule out it being 'badge swapped'.

to the ferrari chap...

So not a fan of the F430, the 5XX or the Scagetti (however it is spelt). Although by the time i can afford one in 10 years time they will have probably brought out new models. When you say services costs are high - what are we talking about? £1000? £2000? I also hear they are not the best reliability wise? I have to say it is a toss up for me. I would like to own one amazing car in my life and the choices between ferrari, aston martin and bentley are growing...so who knows!

Same here... the closest thing I got to a trust fund was a offer to rent a room at my folks place at a discounted rate.

Not that I'm rolling in it here, but should I "go" a little earlier than expected, my children can look forward to accessing their "trust funds" at a very slow and staggered pace. Any estate planner worth his salt is going to tell you that you should be VERY weary about passing your wealth on to your children in a lump some. I specifically remember my attorney saying, "You want to protect them from two things: predators and themselves. And not always in that order."

Enjoy your sleds folks!

~ Ian

I did the same thing w/ a '05 SL500 to the SL55. I'm interested what kind of hit you took. It was the double taxes that killed me... Is it safe to assume you burned about $100K w/ three trades? That's a lot of love!

Good example of never settling for less than what you really want.
But if you've got the patience and the means have at it!

Hi Ian -

With the exception of the 500, all of these cars were traded in with less than 1000 miles on them, and the Silver Arrow had 270 miles on it when I picked it up two weeks ago. All in all, I spent less than $50K in trades getting to where I want to be. Not the wisest way to spend money, but I approached the SL with very limited knowledge in the first place. In the case of the SL - the 500 was an impulse buy... and it truly escalated from there - like a crack addict. I have no regrets, and to me, that's what counts.

I’ll post some pictures of this incredible car on Monday. Since this board has recently been flooded with posers of all types, I will place a little placard on my driver’s seat that will say MBWORLD.com so that I can quickly establish some credit without having an abundant amount of posts.

Good thing you live in Texas. If you lived in California, you would have spent about $50K in sales tax alone.

I picked up the SL500 the same way... somewhat of a impulse buy. I was happy but at 38 I felt like I was driving a car that my father would be more comfortable in... so 3 weeks later I traded it back in for the SL55... lost about $25K in the deal.

The SL500

The SL55

Absolutely no regrets...
