7G transmission...

would the 7G transmission be desirable in the 55 and 65?

2005 SL 500
I would think it would do the same thing for the 55 that it does for the 500 (slightly increase speed and gas mileage). From what I understand, it has not been implimented because the trans can't handle the increased torque of the 55.

perhaps an SL63 could handle it...

please review the article, originally posted in the New M-Class (W164) forum, at this link:

http://www.germancarfans.com/news.cf...id/2050817.002 ,

and specifically this sentence:

''Power transfer in the top M-Class model [ML63] is via an AMG SPEEDSHIFT 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission with a DIRECT SELECT shift lever mounted by the steering wheel"

perhaps the 7G transmission will make it into the AMG SLs.

Yes thats right, when the new AMG engines are released, the 7G tronic mated to this engine. They have not up until now because it has not been able to cope with torque, but by now they have been able to create a strengthened version. Should be interesting, if AMG tunes it well, which I think they will. If so, it can only be better in terms of acceleration, fuel consumption, smoother changes etc. 7 speeds is a lot gears, should allow snappy take-offs, closely stacked ratios and a low top gear for low rev cruising.

Sl63...

i've been scouring MBUSA for a diamond silver SL for my GF.

finally i found two at a single dealership, but they are a 55 and a 600. frankly, i'd wanted just a plain old 500 sport for her. being difficult to find one with comfort package, i began corresponding with the dealer internet rep about the two higher-powered cars.

knowing that a new AMG engine and perhaps the 7G transmission are on their way, i won't even consider either...unless the pricing is too good to pass up.

7G tranny is a step backwards.

It's all about power and speed and this tranny can't hack it.

Fancy stopping the production of the best engine they have made so as to try and keep up with BMW and get a 7 speed. Who gives a **** about BMW, i want my power and Torque.

The engine and transmission of the 600 will not change in the near future... 5.5 L 12-cylinder twin-turbo mated to the 5-speed transmission.

Have you driven a Mercedes with a 7G tranny? I must say that I disagree with your opinion, the 7G is many steps ahead of the 5-speed and a lot of fun at the same time.

I suggest you give the 7G tranny a try, and then let us know what you think of it

LS7 powered Corvette
The 7G is a good trans, just initially implemented in the 211, 220, and 230 before they put the AMG tweak to it to handle the additional power of the 55's 600's 65's. I have seen quite a few shift quality complaints, b/c it does shift harder than the 5 speed but all in all its a sweet piece of machinery. It sure is a PITA to fill/check the level though.
