SL55/63/65/R230 AMG: Why in the world would anyone get an SL55 over an SL600?

Good luck, it is always a hoot to beat someone in a car that should be faster than your "non-sports" luxury car (in my case it is your garden variety sedan with 4 doors).

I am seriously condidering to have mine done a K3. I have some problems everytime i try to toast the 911 turboes. It is alwayes nice with some extra power, it does give you some confidence. I can´t await to see the looks in the Porsche drivers face, when they start wondering what hit them.

Whatever I feel like
I chose the SL600 because it has a wood steering wheel. Seriously it was the mod potential (renntech), but the steering wheel did play a small part .

As for the Renntech Mods voiding the warranty, I found just the opposite where i live. Check out my story here.

After trying both, there is no comparison. Why would anyone buy a 55? Handling differences are very subtle, much less subtle then the power difference. If you are driving near the point to really feel those differences on public roads, I question your judgement.

And you CAN use the power! It saved my life when a truck really ran me over by turning into my lane while another truck blocked my rear!

The interior is not better on the 55, personaly I hate everything AMG changes with the exception of the covering over the top of the dash. Personal taste there however.

FYI, the 600 has the same brakes, and same trany, just different settings. Preliminary inquires tell me they have the same suspension too, also with different settings.

Dont start a religion war here boy´s. Both cars have their advantages, and disadvantages, we just have to accept that and live with it.

So you're saying that you would have been toast in the SL55? They pull pretty much even until breakneck speeds...

No comparison is a little extreme. I have driven both extensively and in normal driving whoever gets the drop will take the other unless you are going into fairly high tripple digits. Both cars are limited as well so neither will run away from the other too badly to 155. Both cars have their own merits but only one is a true AMG and the resale alone proves more people want this. A 600 without the sport package lacks style to me as well. The 600 wheels aren't the greatest either. That said, I would take which ever one I could get the best deal on at the time as long as the 600 had the sport package. Since I would renntech it, the 600 is much better for this.

I think that if you are going to keep your car 100% stock, the SL55 is the better choice for the money. I just found that the Renntech upgrade on the 600 was too good to pass up.

No, It was more of a general statement about what some claim to be insane horsepower cars like these.

I can't understand why MB would use the same steering wheel from the CLK55 on the SL55/65, talk about being exclusive?

On top of that it only comes in BLACK!! I refuse to get a convertible with a black interior for the following 2 reasons:

1) It makes the interior look much smaller tham it is when the top is down.
2) Black absorbs heat more rapidly than other lighter colors and burns my A$$ in the summer! Not even the ventillated seats can help.

Have you seen an R230 interior in AMG ash? Ash is a great color (hard to keep clean) but the steering wheel seems out of place in those cars.

I've never had a problem here in sunny California w/ a hot-to-the-touch steering wheel (and mine is black). The AMG material doesn't seem to retain heat the way some others do. Also, my interior is ash and black -- not that difficult to keep clean at all. For a more unified look I've swapped out the burlwood for black ash trim as well.
