dang it (sorry for the revive)
It's more than just keeping a decent sidewall, you need to keep the correct overall rolling diameter so your speedometer isn't off.
19x8.5 - 255/35/19
19x9.5 - 295/30/19
19x10 - 295/30/19
Those are conservative sizes and are pretty much promised to fit. You can of course go wider, or narrower depending on the kind of tire you get, and how much risk you are willing to take as rubbing is concerned but that's pretty much the norm for what I listed above.

I have been contemplating about tire size, specifically for my rears and i came across this thread. sorry for bringing it back to life! but I have been wanting to run 295/30 for my rears on my SL55 prior to purchasing mew tres last year, but wasn't sure how it'll look. I have the 19" staggered SL63 5 spoke on my SL55, and decided on 285/30 with Conti Extreme Contact sport the tires are flush, but i was looking for a more "meatier" look as what these cars need. Next for sure i will run 255/35/19 and 295/30/19, next tires set would be Michelin PSS PS4S

305/40 x 18 and 275/40 x 18 no rubbing with stock wheels however this is the maximum. I hate rubber band tyres, this old school big tyre SL rides so sweetly now.

Have you ever run into any problems running a setup with different diameters front/rear? Am considering a set for sale near me that would have 255/40/18 and 285/40/18 (instead of 285/35). Anyone have any thoughts?
