Anyone Tried Removing Their Resonator?

My brother has an AMG SLK and, on their board, he read about a guy removing the rear resonator and today went to the muffler shop and had them cut it out. It sounds OUTSTANDING. So, I was wondering if anyone here had tried it on an SL55?

Thanks,

Joe Cortney

Evosport has bypassed several SL55s and they came out awesome. Just right amount of V8 "bark" without the annoying droning that you get with some mufflers.

i also heard that, and was contemplating the same thing. Wanted to ask you if he took off both sides?

i was planning on taking off one side so i can have one side for the smog check to pass when the time comes.

Resonator delete shouldn't affect smog.

removing the resonator does not affect smog, so no worries there. removing catalysts will adversely affect your smog readings, because of the function of catalysts. the function of the resonator is just to produce a frequency which cancels out some of the noise. it is purely a sound muffling mechanism, and is unrelated to emissions. i would imagine that if you take out the resonators on a big s/c v8 like the sl55's m113k, then the sound would be phenomenal. i've heard v8 benzes without resonators, and they are a bit raspier and rumbly, less smooth sounding. very menacing - do it!

Yes, both sides. Sounds amazing. I know mine will sound very different, but his sounds very much like an indy car....

I'm having mine done on Tuesday so I'll let you guys know how it turns out. BTW, it's an amazingly simple thing to do on our cars. Cut out the resonator and weld in a piece of ss pipe and you are done. My buddy who is a Benz Tech told me it should take about a week for the CPU to adjust to the lesser amount of back pressure.

Well, couldn't wait until Tuesday. Had them taken off this afternoon and a piece of new SS pipe welded in place.

I don't know if I can accurately tell you guys how AMAZING, OUTSTANDING, TERRIFIC, (whatever adjitives you like)..... it sounds. Besides, I never did anything on the car before that only cost $150!

Not loud, great growl and really shows it true colors when you are on it.

I need a little help guys.

I remmeber a few days ago I read on ' a ' forum post that has photos of the underside of an SL showing the exhaust. People were discussing which were the resonators and which were the cats.

I thought I read it here on this forum but have not been able to find it using all sorts of keyword searches.

I think I read it here but it might have very well been on another mercedes forum link from a post here.

Anyone knows the post I was talking about? Please share the link if you do.

Thanks!

I've been wanting to do this to my CLK500...however, I've already gotten quotes from 2 different places for $300 and $400. Where did you guys get it done at for $150 or cheaper? Maybe you guys have a cheaper type of pipe replacing the resonator? Thanks.

I had my resonator cut out. Sounds awsome, at one point i had even taken out the cats, that was just way too loud. I'd go for it, and btw i had mine done for about 150.

400$ is too much.
All your doing is chopping off a resonator and welding in a straight pipe.

Would someone post a sound bite with the resonators removed from an SL 55. I would like to hear it what it sounds like. Thanks
