SL55/65 Update

Have you guys seen eMercedes lately? Here is a paragraph that I find interesting and the full article can be found at the link below.

The SL 55, on the other hand, will receive a few more enhancements, including a higher-speed supercharger compressor and a larger throttle valve. The result is a power boost from 368 kW/500 hp to 380 kW/517 hp and an increase in peak torque from 700 to 720 Nm, enough to propel the SL 55 from 0-60 in 4.5 seconds (compared to 4.7 in the previous model).

The thing that interests me is the mention of a new higher speed supercharger resulting in the 5.5 engine producing 517 HP. I thought the 5.5 was going to be replaced by the 6.3. Anybody know what is up with this?

I can't seem to see any difference in the front of the cars. Anyone want to post pics of the 2006 SL55 and the 2007 SL55 side by side and tell me just for the front of the car, whats different .. someone mentioned something about 3 fins vs. 4 fins .. what are they talking about? In the grill around the star? I don't see a change. Maybe I'm blind :P

The main thing that interests me is the comment on the 5.5 engine. I thought it was going to be replaced with the 6.3 engine. If so, why would MB have a new K engine ( and still called SL55, not SL63)with a "higher speed" supercharger and more HP?

Front bumper is more agressive plus it has chrome/silver rings around the fog lights... nice touch. New tail lights and Rear bumper (I believe). Also the multispoke wheels are updated and actually look good as opposed to the old ones! Also slightly updated interior with different color and material options... all black is now a regular choice. The front grille maybe slightly different, I can't tel in those pics tho.

It was NEVER going to be replaced... MB stated long ago that the N/A 6.3 would top out in the E class and two different twin turbo versions would be developed for 'future' applications.

Am ordering '07 SL65 once build spots become available. Am hearing from dealer (from which I've bought many new 55/65/600 before) that 63 motor will be dropped into SL and S-Class AMGs by Dec '06....so revised '07 SL55 may have a 6 mo lifespan before motor is obsolete. Also, hearing that '07 S65 won't be available in US until Dec '06ish...not mid-'06 as indicated in MB press releases at Detroit 1/06 show.....

Would be interested in what latest rumors others are hearing re: S/SL63 and S65 timing...

If there ever is a SL63 w/ the R230 it won't be the N/A version that's pretty much for sure. So no. Whatever replaces the SL55 is anyones guess. MB has that new 5.5L N/A in the SL550 - they could SC or Turbo that or work a Turbo version of the 6.3 into the car.

For people like me, that can't afford anything higher than a $125k-$130k MSRP, the 07 SL55 is a good way to go. If there is a SL63 AMG this year, and its a replacement for the SL55 AMG, I'm sure the MSRP will be quite a bit higher (MB has never sold higher "badge" for lower prices) and it isn't going to go much faster or have a better 0-60 time.

I can only hope one day MB will bring the 7yr/100k mi warranty back.

I doubt that. That would only happen if the SL55 and SL63 were both sold as separate cars with the same model year. Since the 6.3 is a replacement motor for the 5.5 and not an entirely new car the price should only be the normal year to year price increase. Plus the new 6.3 motor should be cheaper to build because that blower is very expensive. There were not huge prices increase from the 2002 E55 (349HP) to 2003 E55 (469HP) nor the 2004 C32 to 2005 C55 nor 2005 E320 to 2006 E350 nor 1997 E420 to 1998 E430 or whenever replacement motors are introduced.

I agree. I'd also go on to say that if they use the 6.3L engine it won't be a N/A version.
